Oare St. Mary

A simple three-part church with a 19th-century extension to the chancel with metal framing in the E window. The interior has a Georgian feel imparted by the box pews and extensive collection of Commandment and other boards.

Note the memorial to R.D.Blackmore, the author whose works did much to popularise Exmoor. It was in his imagination that in this church (before the Victorian extension), Lorna Doone was shot in the midst of her marriage to John Ridd.

SS 802 473, Signposted S of A39 between Porlock and Lynmouth.
