Muchelney Abbey

The monastery was probably founded by King Ine of Wessex in 693 and passed to the Benedictine order in the mid 10th century. The church has been levelled to its footings which show the complexity of its history.

The surviving claustral buildings, part of the S cloister walk and abbots' lodgings, are of great interest. The site is in the care of English Heritage.

ST 427 249, signposted 5km S of Huish Episcopi and situated immediately S of the parish church.
