Milborne Port St John the Evangelist

One of the most fascinating and important early churches in Somerset. The academic arguement still apparently rages whether a substantial part of the fabric of this large, impressive, cruciform building is late Saxon or early Norman indate.

That said most authorities agree the crossing and central tower belong to the period 1025 to 1125. As the accompanying photographs show, the building visibly demonstrates a complex history before and after the Conquest of 1066.

ST 675 185, on high ground on the SW edge of the village just S of A30.
