Glastonbury Abbey

The great abbey church of the Benedictine monastery, itself the richest in England, probably outshone the cathedral church at Wells in its grandeur and architectural sumptuousness. The remaining ruins hint at the quality of the work that has been lost.

Evidence has been found of structures dating back to the Dark Ages but whether they were ecclesiatical in nature or not has yet to be proven. The present ruins all post-date the great late Saxon church on this site.

ST 499 389, occupying its own estate on gently rising ground in the centre of the town.
