Dunster St. George

A fine church in the centre of this picturesque town. As an urban monastic church, it is designed to be two churches in one. The east end served the Benedictine Priory established about 1090 and later as the Lutrell family chapel.

The tower and west end were the parish church. The original Norman church was cruciform in plan - the massive central piers and west door survive. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century and most of the rest of the church as a hall church in the 15th.

SS 990 436, W of the centre of the town on A396.
